Commodities Daily Update

Commodity markets are ending the week with investors continuing to balance geopolitical risks against a shifting interest rate outlook. Energy prices remain elevated as tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz continue to tighten global crude markets, while precious metals are extending their rally on expectations that the Federal Reserve is nearing the end of its tightening cycle. Industrial metals remain mixed, supported by long-term infrastructure demand but facing near-term headwinds from slowing activity in parts of China.

Oil & Gas

Oil prices continued their impressive run this week, although Friday’s pre-market trading showed modest consolidation following five consecutive daily gains. WTI crude slipped 0.3% to $86.57 per barrel while Brent eased 0.3% to $93.53 after reaching multi-week highs. Markets remain focused on escalating economic pressure against Iran, reduced tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, ongoing attacks on Russian refining infrastructure, and tighter global crude supplies. The U.S. also announced an early end to summer gasoline blend requirements to help boost fuel availability. Meanwhile, natural gas rebounded 1.8% after Thursday’s sharp decline as traders assessed weather forecasts and storage expectations heading into late summer.

Energy equities continue to outperform the broader market, supported by higher crude prices and improving cash flow expectations. Exploration & Production ETFs remain among the strongest-performing commodity sectors over the past month, while integrated energy funds continue to post solid gains. Leveraged crude oil ETFs have significantly outperformed as oil prices have rallied over recent weeks.

Metals & Mining

Precious metals continue to lead the commodity complex, with gold reaching fresh three-month highs and remaining on track for another strong weekly gain. The rally has been supported by declining Treasury yields, a weaker U.S. dollar, and growing expectations that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates unchanged. Copper also strengthened, gaining 2.2% in pre-market trading, while zinc posted another strong advance. In contrast, China’s iron ore imports softened during July as steel producers reduced production amid weaker profit margins, highlighting ongoing differences across industrial metals markets.

Mining equities continue to benefit from the improving outlook for precious metals. Gold miner ETFs have now climbed more than 40% over the past month, while silver miners have posted similar gains. Copper mining ETFs also remain strong as investors continue positioning for long-term demand driven by electrification, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and renewable energy investment.

Commodity markets continue to be shaped by two dominant themes: geopolitical uncertainty supporting energy prices and expectations for easier monetary policy boosting precious metals. Oil remains sensitive to developments in the Middle East and global supply disruptions, while gold continues to benefit from lower interest rate expectations and a softer dollar. For investors, the energy sector remains well supported by tightening supply conditions, while precious metals continue to provide diversification and defensive characteristics amid an uncertain macroeconomic backdrop.
