Commodities Daily Update

Commodity markets continued to reflect a mix of geopolitical risk, supply concerns, and evolving macroeconomic expectations. Energy markets remained supported by escalating tensions in the Middle East, while metals markets saw profit-taking in precious metals despite a constructive longer-term outlook for industrial metals. Investors remain focused on upcoming U.S. inventory data, economic releases, and central bank communications, all of which could influence commodity prices in the days ahead.

Oil & Gas

Energy markets extended their recent rally as crude oil prices climbed for a third consecutive session, supported by continued disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and heightened geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, and shipping traffic through the region. WTI crude traded near its highest level since late July as concerns over global supply persisted, while reports indicated Saudi Aramco had resumed some crude loadings despite ongoing security risks. Investors are also watching this afternoon’s API inventory report, followed by the Department of Energy’s weekly petroleum data on Wednesday, for additional insight into U.S. supply conditions. Natural gas prices moved modestly higher as warmer weather forecasts outside the Northeast are expected to support demand, although elevated storage levels continue to temper longer-term price expectations.

Energy equities continued to outperform the broader market, with exploration and production companies, oil service providers, and integrated energy names participating in the advance. ETF performance reflected the strength across the sector, with exploration and production funds leading gains while natural gas-focused products continued to lag due to weaker gas prices.

Metals & Mining

Metals markets opened with a softer tone as rising Treasury yields and a firmer U.S. dollar weighed on precious metals prices after gold’s strong advance earlier in the week. Gold and silver both traded lower in pre-market activity, while copper also eased slightly despite continued optimism surrounding tightening global supply. Longer term, analysts remain constructive on industrial metals, with ongoing mine supply constraints and growing demand for critical minerals supporting favorable price expectations. The U.S. government also proposed new deep-sea mining lease sales aimed at expanding domestic critical mineral production, underscoring the strategic importance of metals tied to electrification and advanced manufacturing.

Mining equities continue to benefit from the broader commodity backdrop despite today’s softer commodity prices. Gold miner ETFs remain among the strongest-performing areas over the past month, while copper miners and diversified metals producers continue to post solid longer-term gains as investors position for sustained demand growth across infrastructure, energy transition, and technology markets.

Commodity markets continue to be driven by a combination of geopolitical developments and supply fundamentals. Energy prices remain highly sensitive to events in the Middle East and upcoming U.S. inventory reports, while metals investors are balancing short-term pressure from higher interest rates against supportive long-term supply-demand dynamics. With key economic data, Federal Reserve minutes, and inventory reports scheduled throughout the week, commodity markets are likely to remain active as investors assess both macroeconomic conditions and ongoing supply risks.
